By employing the new capabilities of digital technology and adjusted
manufacturing procedures, what is of interest here is not the random
manufacture of form, nor the inspiration derived from form in nature for its
own sake, but rather the lessons from nature where form intersects with
function, where the overlap creates the harmony, the underlying elegance
and efficiency that prevails, just as we see occurring in nature. Apart from
the aesthetic merits of this coincidence, the economic benefits manifest in
this harmony are apparent, as the drive towards integrating form and
function constructionally, operates within a framework of overlap. How often
do we see structures that are deemed to be economic, yet are visually
obtrusive? Structures that attempt to express elegance without a clear
hierarchy, which result in expensive pastiche? Buildings that are purist in
form but are functionally limited and expensive?
Our Hand and machine-made concrete molds define structural hierarchy
as the arrangement of structure (both man made and in nature) that most
efficiently evolved as a response to the loading configuration to which it is
subjected. The coincidence of optimal load transfer between associated
elements and the forms that have evolved as a response to the many
complex environmental conditions are a living demonstration of the visual
harmony that exists between form and function.
Contrary to some of the modern movement beliefs that form followed
function and later on the post modernist thesis that form precedes function,
I contend that the most elegant structures that evolved historically, have
combined form and function in a symbiotic relationship, much like the
process of evolution and the forms that we see in nature. Man-made forms
followed an intuitive response to available materials of their time and have
continued to evolve through the advent of new materials. This required a
degree of flexibility in conceptual vision toward combining form and
function, rather than an obsession of expressing form through an
understanding of structural mechanics. A purist approach, whilst in many
cases is directly applicable and efficient such as in the construction of
bridges, and in this case, stamped and architectural concrete products
such as walkways, floors, buildings, walls, etc can however also narrow
vision and potentiality, not to mention resulting in ugly structures (as
evidenced in many concrete construction projects performed by
inexperienced workmen of the past).
